MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Al-Shabaab operative has surrendered to Somali national army in southern Somalia amid military operations against al-Shabaab intensified in central and southern Somalia.
In a statement, Somali military has confirmed that Adan Gurow Isak, a member of Al-Shabaab group turned himself in to Somali military.
Isak was taken into custody in Barawe district of Lower Shabelle region. The defector has been member of the group for the last 7 years.
Somali forces have recently increased the fight against al-Shabaab fighters in the central and southern Somalia.
On Monday, the military had claimed that it killed at least 25 members of al-Shabaab and wounded dozens in an operation in the country’s southwest.
The operation, which took place near the town of Barire in the Lower Shabelle province, was carried out by Gorgor (eagle) special commandos who were trained by the Turkish military under bilateral security cooperation.
“The operation came after the army got an intelligence report that the terrorist fighters were regrouping in the area,” a military statement reads in part.
