MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Leaders of the Somali National Council have held talks with some members of the Council of Presidential Candidates over the ongoing Lower House elections amid rising grievances.
The Zoom meeting chaired by Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble was attended by the opposition presidential candidates and Federal Member State leaders.
The meeting discussed ways to address grievances relating to rigging and ways to improve the transparency of the process.
Federal Indirect Elections Team (FIET) chairman also addressed the meeting. Irro said in a tweet the meeting discussed ‘ways to implement free, fair and timely elections acceptable to all.’
In a statement, former Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud who is a member of CPC said the meeting of the National Consultative Forum and the Council of the Presidential Candidates was to remove the challenges facing the national elections.
“However, the CPC calls for a face-to-face discussion to address the serious concerns over the process. While Friday’s virtual meeting was a step in the right direction, CPC’s stance over the ongoing process will remain the same until concrete measures are taken to restore credibility to the process,” the leader said in the statement.
Recently there had been simmering tensions following grievances over the manner in which the ongoing elections are being conducted.
The CPC last week announced it would no longer participate in the elections noting it would form a forum to chart the way forward.
