MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Russian President Vladimir Putin has wished Somalia success in its war on armed groups in the Horn of Africa country.
Speaking at a ceremony to present credentials to ambassadors including a new ambassador from Somalia, Putin lauded the efforts of Somalia’s authorities to fight terrorism and extremism.
“Your government (Somalia) is taking active steps to strengthen the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country, fighting terrorism and extremism, and seeking to create conditions for socio-economic revival,” Putin said. “And we certainly wish that all these efforts will be crowned with success.”
Somalia’s ambassador to Russia, Hassan Abdi Daud has presented his credentials to Putin on Wednesday.
Daud and Russian leaders discussed prospects for further development of bilateral relations and confirmed Moscow’s and Mogadishu’s commitment to stepping up cooperation between the two countries, including in the political, trade and economic areas.
Russian-Somali relations are at a very low level, with Russia having sent humanitarian aid to Somalia several times.
