MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Prime Minister Mohamed Hussein Roble has held talks with leaders of the country’s regional states over the ongoing elections.
Via video conference, the leaders focused on transparency and acceleration of elections amid claims of irregularities.
During the meeting, Roble urged the leaders of the Consultative Council on the need for a transparent and credible election
In a statement, the office of the PM said Roble shared opposition leaders’ concerns and grievances related to the election of some seats in the House of the People with the regional state leaders.
“The prime minister thanked the states for initiating the parliamentary elections and called on the remaining parties to do so as soon as possible,” a statement from the PM’s office said.
According to the PM’s office, during the meeting, the Presidents of Puntland, Jubaland and HirShabelle announced that they will begin the election of members of the 11th Parliament in the coming days.
The development comes a day after the prime minister held a meeting with opposition leaders in Mogadishu over concerns of elections.
He vowed to ensure transparency in the country’s ongoing parliamentary elections as well as to “correct the mistakes” made so far.
Roble sought to ease political tensions over allegations of a “lack of transparency and blatant violations” in the polls.
“The prime minister is taking into account the concerns expressed about the transparency of the elections by the Union of Candidates, the concern of the Somali people and the international community and promised that the National Consultative Assembly would convene to work together to ensure that the country’s elections occur efficiently and correct mistakes,” Roble said.
