MOMBASA (Halbeeg News) – At least three Kenyan soldiers have been killed and several others wounded after an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) hit a military vehicle in Lamu county.
According to a statement by Kenya Defense Forces (KDF), the explosion destroyed the vehicle, killing at least two soldiers on the spot while another died on the way to the hospital.
The attack targeted convoy on routine patrol between Milimani and Baure areas located in the vast Lamu County.
“Three soldiers were killed and ten others sustained injuries after the terror group, al-Shabaab attacked KDF vehicle with an IED in Lamu County,” the statement reads in part.
Multi-agency security forces have been dispatched to pursue the perpetrators of the attack.
Al-Shabaab has claimed responsibility for the attack saying more than 14 KDF soldiers were killed in the attack.
The group has been targeting Kenyan forces since 2011 when the East African nation sent troops to Somalia over allegations that al-Shabaab had kidnapped dozens of foreign tourists from the Kenyan coastal region.
Kenya has now more than 4000 soldiers operating under AMISOM.
