MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Ramla Ali, a Somali female boxer is today expected to face Romania’s Maria Claudia Nechita in round 16 under the women featherweight category this afternoon in the ongoing Olympics in Tokyo, Japan.
The boxing match will kick off at 2.14 local time. Ali will become the first Somali boxer to go to an Olympics.
In an earlier interview with Euro Sport, Ali said that she hopes to inspire young Somalis as she making her debut at the Tokyo Games.
“I’m hoping to inspire the next Ramla Ali to think bigger than being someone’s housewife and show that we came from the same place and if I can do it, you can do it too,” she said.
Ali who moved to England from Somalia as a teen managed to win the 2015 Novice National Championships in England, the 2016 England Boxing Elite Championships.
Ramla was ranked number 9 in African Games under the featherweight category in 2019.
