MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Several Shabab fighters were apprehended by Somali National Army (SNA) and African Union Mission (AMISOM) forces in a joint operation in southern Somalia on Sunday, according to the AU mission.
In a statement, Amisom said its Burundian contingent based at Gololey joined the operation, flushing out militants hiding in the Sayga forest.
“A number of al-Shabab fighters were captured and handed over to the Somali police for further investigations,” Amisom said.
The mission said the operation was aimed at ensuring free movement of Somali people on the main supply route of Mogadishu-Jowhar,
The development comes barely two days after two people including a senior military official were killed in a roadside bomb that targeted a military vehicle near Gololey on the outskirts of Bal’ad, an agricultural town 40 kilometers (24 miles) from the capital, Mogadishu.
Al-Shabaab militant group claimed the responsibility for the attack saying they killed several soldiers in the blast.
