MOGADISHU ( HALBEEG NEWS) – The Federal Government of Somalia has announced the allocation of US 500,000 to help thousands of victims affected by floods in the Lower Shabelle region.
Prime Minister Hassan Ali Khaire has directed the Ministry of Finance to dispatch the funding for the purchase of humanitarian supplies to assist the affected citizens following a meeting with state leaders in Dhusamareb on Wednesday.
According to the Leader of Southwest state more, 6800 families were displaced and there is an urgent need for local international support to mitigate the disaster.
Flooding resulted by Haga rains has caused shortages of food and clean water as it is worsened by an invasion of desert locusts which have fed on crops that could be harvested by the population which is largely farmers in the affected areas.
In Afgoye district the worst-hit town the roads have been destroyed, communication networks cut, residents displaced and businesses disrupted as floods continue to wreak havoc.
