NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Former leader of Somalia’s northeastern regional state, Puntland, Mohamed Abdi Hashi has died in Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya.
According to sources and Puntland authorities, late Hashi died in hospital in Nairobi where has been undergoing treatment for unspecified disease.
The leader died Sunday morning, According to statement by Puntland Presidential State.
The incumbent leader of the state, Saed Abdullahi Deni who is currently in Dhusameeb town for inter-regional state summit has extended condolences to the family of the late Hashi.
“The president of Puntland state, Saed Abdullahi expresses condolences on the death the former president of Puntland state. Late Mohamed Abdi Hashi was one of the founders of Puntland state,” the statement reads in part.
Hashi was the leader United Somali party (USP) and was among the politicians who had formed the current Puntland.
He was deputy leader of Puntland state during reign of Abdullahi Yussuf Ahmed who ruled the region between 1998 and 2004.
Hashi was interim leader of the state between 2004 and 2005.
