HAGUE ( Halbeeg News) – The Federal Government of Somalia has formally responded to Kenyan request to delay hearing of the maritime dispute case at the International Court of Justice.
Somalia’s envoy to European Union, EU Ambassador Ali Said Fiqi submitted his country response to the Netherland based court on Wednesday.
Ambassador Fiqi told the media that Nairobi move to delay the process is “deeply troubling” and “unjustified, harmful” to the judicial process.
” We contacted our lawyers at the court informing them that Somalia will not accept Kenyan request.”
Ambassador Fiqi said, ” I submitted a letter to the court on our official position regarding the delay.” he added.
Ambassador Fiqi reiterated that Somali government will not resort to any avenue other than the court to resolve the maritime dispute with the neighboring Kenya.
The hearing is set to take place next week from Sept. 9-13 at the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Both countries claim control over a 100,000-square-kilometer area in the Indian Ocean that is said to be rich in natural resources.
Somalia originally filed the case at the ICJ in August 2014 after negotiations with its East African neighbor failed.
