MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)-Somali prime minister, Hassan Ali Kheyre has officially launched the construction tarmac road project of 30-kilometre road between Mogadishu and Afgoye, and the 90-kilometre road from Mogadishu to Jowhar on Monday.
The launch of the project was attended by senior government officials from Qatar, the regional leaders of Southwest and Hirshabelle administrations respectively.
A Turkish company has won the contract to rebuild the 120-kilometre road that was destroyed by the more than two decades of civil war in the country.
Somali premier who presided over the ceremony has described the inauguration of the project as bright future for the Somali businessmen and farmers saying it will boost their market activities.
The road construction project which is expected to be completed within two years is significant as it connects Somalia’s food basket regions of Shabelle to the other parts of the country especially the capital, Mogadishu.
Qatar is providing over $200 million of financial aid for the project to be implemented.
