MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)-Somali government through the ministry of health and social services has taken over the management of two main hospitals in the capital, Mogadishu.
Banadir and Martini hospitals were managed privately since 1991 when the country descended into lawlessness.
Martini which is owned by the ministry of defense is a memorial hospital for members of the armed forces, and it houses the veterans of 1977 Somali-Ethiopian war while Banadir is a mother and child clinic.
The hospitals will have new management under the ministry of health and social services.
Minister for health and social services, Fowzia Abikar Noor, led a brief handover ceremony held at Banadir hospital on Wednesday. She thanked the staff for their resilience during a state of the civil strife while pledging to improve the health of their communities.
She said the government has taken over the health facilities and committed to improving the services of the two amenities.
The minister added that it is the policy of the federal government to return all public health centers under the control of the ministry of health to move forward the reforms in the health sector.
