MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News)-Somali Deputy Prime Minister, Mahdi Mohamed Guleid has today launched Durable Solution Unit (DSU) in Somali capital city, Mogadishu.
The meeting will focus on means to chart a new course on phasing out displacement in Mogadishu.
Speaking at the opening of the meeting, Mahdi said his government is committed to finding a long lasting and dignified solution to Mogadishu’s prolonged displacement.
“The displacement in Somalia is one of the biggest priorities for the federal government. We must ensure that all of our citizens afford opportunities to rebuild their lives as quickly as possible,” he said.
The meeting is attended by officials from the Benadir administration, local and international NGOs as well as well-wishers.
Several aid agencies are carrying out projects to support the Benadir Regional Administration in formulating an IDP policy.
This is the first IDP policy for the Benadir Regional Administration (BRA), developed to provide a coherent and coordinated response from the BRA to the current IDP crisis in the city of Mogadishu.
IDP Policy is specific to the Benadir Region, it recognises and is informed by ongoing efforts to adopt a Somali National IDP Policy.
The policy is an integral part of Pillar 6 of the BRA’s Strategic Plan of 2018-2023.
According to the administration, the policy will cover all 17 districts and is specifically tailored to IDPs; however, it also recognises that there are other categories of displaced persons – refugees and returnees – and who are in the same condition to IDPs.
It will be delivered in collaboration with various government institutions, federal member states, as well as with national and international organisations.
The policy has a durable solutions outlook and covers access to land, tenure security and inclusive development, proper documentation, social inclusion and participation; access to services and labour markets; and rural integration capacity.
