NEW YORK( Halbeeg News)- U.S. Africa Command has rescinded its earlier announcement to stop detailing damages of its airstrike in Somalia.
In an interview with VOA, spokesman John Manley said they will again release the number of enemy fighters killed and damage information caused from its airstrikes.
“We will continue to report results of strikes, although we are working on refining our messaging to place less emphasis on the number of militants killed and place more context on how these strikes are helping our Somali partners achieve their strategic security objectives,” Manley said.
Earlier Thursday, the Mission said the details are up to Somalia’s government to share.
“We no longer discuss battle damage assessments resulting from our airstrikes,” said the mission in a statement.
The U.S. says the latest airstrikes occurred Wednesday near Jilib in Middle Juba region, where Saturday’s strike occurred.
The United States has dramatically stepped up airstrikes against Al-Shabab in Somalia since President Donald Trump took office, carrying out at least 47 last year to diminish the Islamic extremist group’s “safe havens.”
The development comes six days after the U.S. military announced its deadliest airstrike in Somalia in months which over 50 Al-Shabaab fighters killed after a “large group” attacked Somali forces.
