SANGUUNI(Halbeeg News)- Over seventy Al-Shabaab fighters have been killed and dozens injured in a fierce fighting with Somali National Army (SNA) backed by the international partners in Southern Somalia, military officials said.
According to Somali National News Agency (SONNA), the joint forces foiled the attack from Al-Shabaab at the base at Bar-Sanguni neighborhood near Kismayo town in Jubbland.
The news agency said international partners conducted airstrikes in the area that targeted Al-Shabab fighters.
Abdi Hussein Mohamed, Information minister for Jubbaland state who confirmed the killing said heavily heavily armed Al-Shabaab fighters stormed SNA on Saturday morning.
“There was an attack by the terror group at Barsanguni at dawn,” said the minister, “the troops managed to repel by destroying three vehicles used by the group including UD lorry used to transport the militants, no casualties on our side” He added.
The attack came hours after the group said on Friday that their fighters killed 57 Ethiopian troops under the framework of African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) in an ambush near Burhakaba town in southern Somalia.
AMISOM has not yet commented on the ambushed against its troops.
The group continues to control several villages and towns in Southern Somalia.
