WASHINGTON (Halbeeg News)- Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar, was appointed as member of the House of Representatives’ foreign affairs and aid committee.
The appointment by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi on Thursday will see Minnesota congresswoman to be an integral part of the powerful panel that oversees US foreign policy and foreign aid.The House Foreign Affairs Committee is the primary body within the House of Representatives responsible for oversight of the executive branch’s foreign policy, and for legislation relating to foreign policy.
The legislator announced the posting on Twitter, saying the assignment would put her on a panel that oversees all foreign assistance, national security affecting the country’s foreign policy, treaties, peacekeeping and war powers.
She did gesture her eagerness to work toward fundamentally changing America’s relationship with another Middle Eastern ally.
“We need to investigate how foreign governments and their lobbyists have violated our laws,” she said. “And we need to reign in arms sales to human rights abusers like Saudi Arabia.”
Jewish rights group in the states have already raised their concerns about the U.S. Representative for Minnesota’s 5th congressional district appointment into the influential committee.
Their worry is based on congresswoman support for BDS movement, the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement is a global campaign promoting various forms of boycott against Israel until it meets what the campaign describes as Israel’s obligations under international law.
Born in Somalia and raised in Kenyan refugee camp Ilhan Omar, who was first elected to congress in November’s midterm elections, is also one of two first-ever Muslim women to be elected to Congress, along with Democrat Rashida Tlaib who has Palestinian parent.
