MOGADISHU( Halbeeg News)- At least two UN staff and one contractor have been injured after motor shells landed inside United Nations compound in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Seven mortars landed inside the compound this afternoon, according to UN envoy Somalia, Nicholas Haysom.
In a statement, Haysom condemned the attack in the strongest possible terms today’s indirect attack on the UN base.
“Today’s indirect fire attack on the main UN compound in Mogadishu may amount to a violation of international humanitarian law, and I deplore this unwarranted act of aggression against our personnel,” said Mr. Haysom
He confirmed injuries of three people including two UN staff members and one contractor.
“No political agenda can be served through violence that deliberately targets staff members of international organizations who are supporting the consolidation of peace and the strengthening of governing institutions in Somalia. I wish our wounded colleagues a full recovery from their injuries,” he stated.
Haysom said none of the injuries is life-threatening.
The attack which was confirmed by AMISOM also caused damage to office reportedly manned United Nations.
In a twitter post AMISOM said a round of mortars was aimed at the Mogadishu International Airport (MIA) compound this afternoon.
The mission added that all of them missed their target and the situation is under control.
Through their affiliate media, Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for the attack saying the shells killed over five people.
In 2014, eight Al-Shabaab gunmen infiltrated the main African Union (AU) base in Mogadishu, killing three peacekeepers and a civilian contractor before they were eliminated.
Al-Shabaab has been carrying out deadly attacks on military base manned Somali and AU forces since 2011 when the group lost control of the city to Somali troops.
