MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Somali National Army (SNA) said its forces killed two foreign Al-Shabaab fighters in Southern Somalia after joint operation on Sunday.
Speaking to the media, Ali Mohamad, SNA commander for section 43 said Somali army backed by US troops conducted operation to hunt Al-Shabaab fighters in Middle Jubba region.
“Our special forces carried out a joint operation with U.S. Africa Command in the southern town of Jilib. We confronted Al-Shabaab fighters in their training bases outside the town, prompting hours of fighting,” he said.
Mohamed confirmed the deaths of 30 Al-Shabaab fighters who were killed in the joint offensive by Somali national forces and the U.S. Africa Command (Africom) near a training camp.
“30 al-Shabab militants among them two foreigners were killed in the fighting and the operation against Al-Shabaab,” Mohamed said.
According to Mohamed, the two foreign fighters killed were identified as Aways Abuhamza from Syria and Hasan Al-qayadi Abu Yahya from Libya.
The development comes a day after the leader of Jubbaland State, Ahmed Mohamed Madobe vowed war on Al-Shabaab in Middle and Lower Jubba regions.
Somali forces and AMISOM troops have been carrying out offensives against Al-Shabaab fighters in South and central Somalia.
