GAROWE (Halbeeg News) – Puntland leader, Abdiweli Ali Gaas has announced his bid to run for the presidency of the regional state in northeastern Somalia.
Speaking at an event in Garowe town, Mr. Gaas said he is a candidate and will formally start a campaign for the presidential elections slated for early next year.
Gas who has been ruling Puntland since 2014 will be facing stiff competition from several potential candidates including his former chief of forces.
Early this month, a number of Puntland presidential candidates accused Gaas of creating a political crisis in the state by appointing Vetting and Dispute Resolution Committee.
Following the appointment of the committee, Puntland deputy leader Abdihakim Omar Amey dispelled the move culminating in new political tensions in the state.
Amey blamed Gaas for appointing the eight-member committee unilaterally.
Last week, the two leaders moved to court to resolve their dispute ahead of the presidential elections which is expected to take place on 8th of January 2019.
