KUWAIT CITY (Halbeeg News) – The government of Kuwait has lifted the ban on Somali livestock imports, the trade ministry of the Peninsula country confirmed.
In a statement by the ministry posted on Al-Anba online media, the decision came after the Kuwait authorities considered to expand their trade with Somalia, paving the way for export of livestock to the middle eastern nation.
“The ban on all livestock from Somalia has been lifted, the importation of livestock from Somali will resume forthwith and will be regulated in accordance with the World Organisation for Animal Health standards,” the statement reads in part.
The development comes barely four months after Saudi Arabia lifted a ban on livestock imports from Somalia.
Somalia’s livestock which sails from the ports of Berbera, Bosaso, Mogadishu and other towns are exported to Arab countries.
Animal exports account for 40 per cent of Somalia’s Gross Domestic Product.
The Middle East is the leading export destination with other Asian countries accounting for tiny portions of the trade.
Several countries including Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, and UAE banned livestock imports four years ago, citing that they had detected disease in the Somali livestock.
