MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Six Al-Shabaab fighters were killed during a joint operation conducted by US and Somali special forces in Basra near Balcad town, south of the capital Mogadishu.
Somali National Intelligence and Security Agency (NISA) confirming the operation in series of Twitter posts on Sunday said a ringleader of the eliminated fighters was nabbed during the operation.
No further details of the detained Al-Shabaab operative were shared in the posts.
Somali elite forces backed by US troops operating under the framework of Africa Command (AFRICOM) have intensified operations against Al-Shabaab fighters on the outskirt of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Last week, four suspected Al-Shabaab fighters were killed in Awdhigle town after the forces launched a covert operation.
During the attack, the joint forces also destroyed IED-making materials.
The assault comes barely two days after armed group Al-Shabaab claimed the responsibility for an explosive attack that killed two senior military officers who were spearheading the fight against the group.
