MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali military court in Mogadishu has sentenced a military officer to 8 years in prison on Saturday after he was found guilty of robbing residents.
In a statement, Somali military court said Hukun Hassan Abshir was found guilty of robbing local residents in Bakara market after he secretly left his duty station in Lower Shabelle region following several court proceedings
Mr. Abshir was convicted for committing a series of robbery in several areas in the capital city, Mogadishu and surrounding areas.
According to the prosecutors, Mr. Abshir was suspended from the duty after the commanders confirmed the crimes he committed.
The statement issued on Saturday says the military court handed down the sentence in the military tribunal in Mogadishu, ending the case that has spanned one month period.
Meanwhile, military court said that the defendant can pursue an appeal if he is not satisfied with the verdict.
The military court often carries out sentences and executions to Al-Shabaab fighters and government soldiers who commit crimes despite condemnation from human rights groups including the European Union.
