BAIDOA (Halbeeg News) – A delegation from African Union (AU) Peace and Security Council has today arrived in Baidoa, the administrative capital of Southwest state.
The delegation was warmly received at Baidoa airport by the South West State Minister of Security Mr. Hasan Hussein Mohamed.
The AU-PSC held closed-door meetings with the acting president, Abdikadir Sharif Shekhuna and later with five presidential candidates of the South West state.
The discussions focused on wide range issues including security and the forthcoming presidential elections.
The AU Officials have also met with presidential candidates vying in the state’s upcoming presidential elections.
Speaking to the media after the discussions, the AU Special Representative for Somalia, Francisco Madeira who was accompanying the AU-PSC delegation said the visit of the AU officials was to assess the political and security situation in the Horn of Africa country.
“The purpose of this visit is to assess the security situation in Baidoa in light of the upcoming presidential election. It is our hope that the presidential election will be free and fair,” Madeira said.
The delegation will later today visit Hirshabelle state where they are expected to hold deliberations with political leaders.
