NAIROBI (Halbeeg News) – Kenyan Police officer and four Al-Shabaab suspects were killed in fierce fighting between Al-Shabaab and Kenyan forces in Ijara, Garissa county.
Heavily armed men, whose exact number remains unknown, struck the camp shortly after 11 pm and proceeded to open fire indiscriminately.
Confirming the incident on Monday, Linda Boni Operation Director Joseph Kanyiri said a number of ammunition were also recovered in the 11pm incident.
Mr Kanyiri said the fighters had attacked a Safaricom communications mast in Ijara but officers engaged them in a firefight that saw four of the terrorists killed.
“Last night at around 11pm, Border Patrol Unit officers serving in Boni Forest thwarted an Al-Shabaab terrorists attack against Ijara Safaricom mast. BPU officers engaged the Al-Shabaab in a firefight that saw four terrorists killed, six AK-47 rifles and a number of ammunition recovered,” said Mr Kanyiri.
Ijara sub-county has borne the brunt of Al-Shabaab fighters due to its proximity to Boni forest and Somalia.
The incident comes barely two weeks after local government officials held a security meeting with the locals in the area which is near the Somali border to enhance security.
