ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – The Ethiopian government has arrested Col. Gebregziabher Alemseged, known to most Somalis as simply ‘General Gabre’ over crimes against humanity.
Colonel Gabre’s decades-long involvement in Somalia began in 2006 when Ethiopian troops invaded Somalia to topple the ICU at the behest of their American financiers and with an invitation from then-President Abdullahi Yusuf.
The colonel is accused of human rights abuses in the Somali region of Ethiopia and the recent deadly violence in the regional capital Jijiga.
Gebre served as political advisor to the Secretary-General of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
According to ESAT, TPLF army commander in Somalia has been accused of corruption and loss of civilian lives since the Ethiopian troops set their feet on Somali soil in 2006.
The arrest of Gebre was welcomed by Somali government terming it one step forward to bring justice to the perpetrators of atrocities made by Ethiopian soldiers.
“It is good news that the notorious Col. Gebregziabher Alemseged has been arrested in Ethiopia. He is a man who had for a long time been involved in meddling and destabilizing Somalia,” the spokesperson of Somali President, Abdinur Mohamed, “His arrest shows Ethiopia is committed to the stability of the Horn of Africa.”
Col. Gabre is generally disliked by Somalis for his perceived meddling into Somali affairs. Many view his presence in Somalia as a destabilizing factor working for Ethiopian interests.
