MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali government jailed eight officials charged with corruption for the first time since 1990 when Somali central government collapsed.
Somali detectives under the anti-corruption department have recently been carrying out operations to arrest government officials linked to corruption charges as stepping up his fight against corruption amongst its staff.
Officials from the ministry of humanitarian affairs, Mogadishu port and a development project funded by the Islamic Dev. Bank, were convicted of misusing public funds.
Benedir Regional Court sentenced the head of customs at Mogadishu port Ahmed Abdullahi Samow and four other port workers including a police officer to three years in prison after they were found guilty of involving in corruption.
Dahir Mohamed Nur and Mohamed Omar who are officials with the ministry of humanitarian affairs and disaster management have been sentenced to six months and three years in jail respectively.
Mr. Nur who was the director of Resettlement in the Humanitarian Affairs Ministry was arrested in July in what the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) said was in connection with the loss of $84,000.
Abdishakur Aden Mohamud, coordinator of a development project funded by the Islamic Development Bank and managed by the ministry of finance has been jailed to serve 3 years in prison for corruption.
A businessman is sentenced to 2 years prison and $8,200 fine and two other defendants were acquitted.
Last year, PM, Hassan Ali Khaire pledged that his government will tackle corruption and vowed to make the fight against misconduct a non-negotiable principle in his administration.
