MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The newly formed political alliance party led by former President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud has changed its name from Union for Peace and Democracy (UPD) after it was accused of illegally using political entity.
Mr. Mohamud was elected to be the interim chairperson the political party launched this week for the next six month which the party will hold its first congress.
In an event which attended by over 600 delegates where the party was officially unveiled, its leadership announced that they have changed the name of the party to Union for Peace and Development, but retained the same UPD acronym.
Part of the party’s manisfesto indicates that the party will carry out intiatives to host social and political negociations.
UPD pledged to decend the administration system to lowest level which village administration if it wins in the upcoming 2020 elections.
Days after the launching of the party which comprising three political parties, Daljir and Horusocod and Peace and Development Party (PDP), the alliance has met with its first obsticle over its name after another political entity registered under a similar name lodged complain.
Southwest minister for Justice, Abdullahi Sheikh said he had formed Union for Peace and Democracy {UPD} and registered it with the poll agency in 2011.
The minister had formally complained to the poll agency against the New party led by Mr. Mohamud.
It is yet unclear whether the minister dropped his bid to move to court over the name as the alliance have already announced their name for the party.
