MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali ministry for planning has ordered International Non-governmental Organisations (INGOs) working in Somalia and based outside the country to relocate to Somalia.
In a meeting with the leadership of the INGOs, the country’s minister for planning Gamal M Hassan gave them a four months ultimatum to move to Somalia.
Mr. Hassan vowed to de-register the agencies failed to comply the directive.
“Today, I met with the leadership of the INGOs operating Somalia. I inform them of the gov’t decision to have all INGOs fully & physically president in Somalia including their senior leadership effective from January 1, 2019. Failure to comply will result in de-registration,” the minister said.
Majority of international organisations working in Somalia are based in Kenya’s capital city of Nairobi.
Since the 1990s when Somalia’s central government led by late Mohamed Siyad Barre was toppled, many U.N. and international aid agencies dispatched their workers to Somalia to help the civilians.
