GARBAHAREY(Halbeeg News)- Burdhuubo administration in Gedo region says nine Al-shabab fighters were killed in a planned security operation conducted by Somali National Army in some villages surrounding the town.
Hassan Mohamed Ali, the administrator of Burdhuubo told the local media briefly that the government forces killed nine fighters among them two commanders in an intensive security crackdown conducted at Qondhoobo village following tip-offs and intelligence reports, but Hassan declined to give the names and titles of the commanders killed during the operations.
“Well trained soldiers carried out planned operations at Qondhoobo village located 38 kilometers outside Burdhuubo town. They managed to kill nine Al-shabab fighters among them two commanders” Hassan said.
“We will give full details of the fighters after investigations are over” He said.
The administrator also confirmed that the forces have recovered weapons and ammunitions from the fighters during the operations in the area adding that the operations will continue until al-shabab fighters are smoked out of the all areas under Burdhuubo town.
“The forces have recovered weapons from the fighters, this kind of operations will continue until the area is fully secured” He stressed.
Somali military backed by allied forces including U.S. and AU troops intensified the war on Al-Shabaab in South and central Somalia.
These full scale operations in Gedo and Lower Jubba regions comes a week after AMISOM Force Commander Lt. Gen. Jim Beesigye Owoyesigire called upon Somalis to support joint efforts by the national army and the AU forces to end the Al Shabaab insurgency.
The force commander of the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM), has concluded a tour of forward operating bases in all the six sectors where African Union peace-keeping troops operate.
