MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Head of Mogadishu Port Revenue Authority has surrendered himself to the police.
Mr. Ahmed Ali Samow, the managing director of the port revenue authority turned himself in to the police on Saturday evening and was being held at the CID headquarters.
He is among senior managers of the port being sought over corruption allegations.
Others who were arrested are six managers and Assistant Managers at Mogadishu port Customs office.
They are set to be charged with conspiracy to defraud contrary to the regulations of the port, conspiracy to commit an offence of economic crime contrary to the constitution of the country and abuse of office.
The arrests of these officials on corruption charges may signal intent to get to the root cause of the problem.
The dragnet is managing to catch the big fish, which somehow pours cold water on Government assurances that corruption is being fought.
Among those targeted are deputy minister, directors, assistant directors, and managers.
But being too little too late, it may not assuage a public and international community that have been growing increasingly restless at the level of corruption in Government institutions.
Somalia is often ranked as one of the most corrupt countries in the world by international watchdogs.
