MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Dozens of Somali farmers, government officials, and UN representatives will gather in Mogadishu to discuss on agriculture and food security issues.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (MoAI) of the Federal Government of Somalia together with the United Nations World Food Programme (WFP) will host an event which will focus on the role of Somali farmers in promoting food security in Somalia.
According to a statement by the Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation event will be held on Sunday at the WFP Warehouse in Mogadishu seaport.
The meeting will be co-chaired by Agriculture Minister Said Hussein Eid and WFP Somalia Country Director and Representative Laurent Bukera.
High-level government officials and representatives of the humanitarian community will join farmers and heads of ten cooperatives.
The statement says the meeting will showcase 2500 metric tonnes of high-quality maize which WFP recently purchased from farmers in Afgoye and Awdheegle districts in Somalia’s Lower Shabelle region.
The purchase is part of MoAI’s and WFP’s ongoing initiative to support small and medium holder farmers in Somalia by helping them with post-harvest management and connecting them to local markets.
WFP has purchased over 7,000 metric tonnes of maize from Somali farmers since the launch of the initiative in 2013.
UN food agency will distribute the maize to hundreds of Somali families in need of life-saving food assistance.
