HARGEISA (Halbeeg News) – The authorities in breakaway Somaliland raised hopes of a breakthrough in one of country’s most complicated border dispute.
Dozens of people were killed and injured in deadly fighting between Puntland and Somaliland regional states over the territorial dispute.
Somaliland foreign minister, Salad Ali Shere, who spoke to media confirmed Somaliland’s readiness to end resolve the intractable dispute in Sool and Sanaag regions.
“We met with delegates from the UN and Intergovernmental Authority Development (IGAD) over the issue of dispute. On our side, we agreed on the implementation of the prisoners of war, cease-fire, and dialogue,” Shire said.
Puntland state on their side did not comment on the call by authorities of Somaliland.
Hargeisa base its claims on the imaginary boundaries set by the British during the colonial period as Puntland’s claim is based on clans agreement inked during the formation of the state two decades ago.
Somaliland declared independence from Somalia in the 1990s.
Despite relative stability and commendable governance, the region has not yet been recognized by the international community.
