MOGADISHU (Halbeeg) – An ISIS man who pleaded guilty to be a member of the group has been given life in prison.
Islamic State has been gathering recruits in the region, although experts say the scale of its force is unclear and it remains a small player compared to the al Shabaab group.
Jama’a Hussein Hassan confessed to being a member of Islamic State and admitted his role in attacks against Somali forces that took place in and outside the capital.
Liban Ali Yarow , the Chairman of the military court, said, Hassan is proved to have been part of ISIS fighters and fought alongside the group’s fighters in Puntland state.
“After all the court proceeding including hearings and the presentation of pieces of evidence the court sentences Jama’a Hussein Hassan to life imprisonment,” Yarow said. “He can take an appeal within 30 days otherwise the sentence will be carried out.”
Hassan was arrested by the security forces in Afgooye town while planting Improvised explosive devices (IEDs) on a roadside.
The pro-Islamic State faction in northeastern Somalia is led by Sheikh Abdulkadir Mumin, a former al-Shabab cleric who pledged his allegiance to IS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi in 2015.
In 2016, the U.S. State Department designated Mumin as a global terrorist.
Since the emergence of the IS faction in October 2015, the group has claimed responsibility for deadly attacks in Puntland and southern Somalia
