Two Al-Shabaab fighters have defected and surrendered to SNA and Jubbaland forces in Kismayo on Thursday, security officials confirmed.
One of the defecters identified as Aden Udoow Abdi handed over AK47 and rounds of ammunition during the surrender.
The Head of criminal investigation office in Kismayo, Ahmed Muse who addressed the local media at Fiat police station said the two fighters deserted Al-shabab fighters after making contacts with the security forces in the region.
“These youth that you can see here have surrendered to the security forces, we welcomed them, and one of them handed over his weapons and ammunition. They have decided to lay down arms and join their people” said Ahmed.
Jubbaland’s head of criminal investigations called on other fighters to renounce violence and surrender to government forces adding that Al-Shabaab is becoming a burden on Somalis.
Late last month 12 Al-shabab fighters, twelve Al-shabab fighters defected to the federal government forces in Kismayo.
The fighters that laid down the arms came from Bar Sanguuni, Bula Haji and Abdalla Biroole villages in Lower Jubba region.
Among the fighters that surrendered to the forces are two senior officials who were Al-shabab commander in several villages under Kamsuma town.
The forces displayed Al-shabab defectors at Barsaguuni villages before they were ferried to Kismayo for investigation.
