Reports from Lower Jubba region indicate that 12 Al-shabab fighters defected to the federal government forces on Thursday, officials confirm.
The fighters that laid down the arms came from Bar Sanguuni, Bula Haji and Abdalla Biroole villages in Lower Jubba region.
Among the fighters that surrendered to the forces are two senior officials who were Al-shabab commander in several villages under Kamsuma town.
The forces displayed Al-shabab defectors at Barsaguuni villages before they were ferried to Kismayo for investigation.
Moalim Muse Abdullahi Magalow among the fighters who surrendered to the government forces was Al-shabab commander in charge of Zakawat collection in over five villages in Lower Jubba region
Magalow said he decided to lay down his arms after he has see the excesses of Al-shabab against the poor people in the area.
“ The poor in the areas under Al-shabab control are forced to pay Zakawat- whether he has or not. After I have seen these excesses I said I cannot tolerate this injustice and decided to surrender to government” said Magalow.
On Wednesday Al-shabab fighter identified as Hussein Mohamed Ramadhani surrendered to Somali National army in Jubbalnd state.
Abdi Ibrahim Abdalla, the SNA commander in Barsanguni village who spoke to Halbeeg News said the fighter defected from Al-Shabab.
Since the defection of Former Al-Shabab deputy leader, Sheikh Mukhtar Robbow, dozens of the group’s fighters turned themselves in.
