At least two quarry workers have been killed and three seriously wounded late on Thursday after heavily armed Al-shabab fighters attacked a village near Kenya’s border with Somalia.
Al-Shabaab fighters have attacked workers at a quarry in Shimbir-Fatuma village in Mandera County.
Locals say the attack occurred shortly after 5:30pm when the workers were asleep.
The attack claimed the lives of two people and left three others with serious injuries though the government of Kenya has not yet officially released the number of casualties.
County Commissioner Kutswa Oloka who also confirmed the incident said the number of casualties is unknown.
“An incident has been reported but I can’t tell if there are deaths or injuries since our security teams are headed there,” he said on Thursday evening.
Mr Oloka has said the assault happened at around 5:30 pm at Shimbir Fatuma, Mandera South.
The security teams comprise of Kenya Defense Forces, Regular Police and police reservists.
