The federal parliament of Somalia has on Tuesday elected a former ambassador and ex-defense minister Mohamed Mursal Sheikh Abdirahman as the speaker of the federal parliament.
Mursal won the race after he garnered 147 votes while his competitor Ibrahim Yarrow Isak got 118 votes.
The first deputy speaker of the federal parliament Abdiweli Mudey announced the results of the votes immediately after the election was concluded.
“Mohamed Mursal acquired 147 votes while Ibrahim Yarrow Isak got 118 votes, therefore Mohamed Mursal was officially elected as the new speaker of the parliament” Mudey said.
Mursal was the former defense minister of federal government before he stepped down and vie for the position of speaker.
He will replace Mohamed Sheikh Osman Jawari who resigned early this month after a month long political deadlock in the parliament.
