Majority of Beledweyne residents have been displaced by floods after River Shabelle broke its banks, official confirmed on Sunday
Families with children and aged people have fled from their homes after the floods inundated the town.
Hirshabelle President, Mohamed Abdi Waare said all residents of Beledweyne have vacated the town as a result of the floods of River Shabelle.
Speaking to the media, Ware said the floods affected the basic services and livelihoods of the residents.
“100% of residents of Beledweyne town have been displaced, the rains are still falling, last night and the night before, floods submerged everything, the situation has deteriorated,” said Ware.
The remarks of President comes on the heels of a call by the council of inter-state cooperation to help the victims of the floods.
In a statement on Sunday, the council said the floods displaced thousands of people across the country.
“The floods have seriously affected all basic services and livelihoods of people living along riverine villages destroying homes, food stocks, crops, water wells. It also displaced over 15,000 household,” reads the statement.
