Somali forces backed by AMISOM troops fought Al-Shabaab near Barawe town of Lower Shabelle region.
The fighting embarked after Alshabab ambushed a convoy carrying AMISOM troops and Somali army late on Saturday near Barawe district of Lower Shabelle region, about 179km (114 miles) South West of Somali capital.
Somali military officials who confirmed the attack say the allied forces repulsed Al-shabab attack.
Several Al-shabab were killed and weapons seized from the fighters, according officials.
Meanwhile, in a statement which Al-shabab posted on its pro-websites claimed that its fighters killed a number of soldiers and destroyed vehicles belonging to the AMISOM during the attack.
The group has also claimed to have made away with one AMISOM’s Armour Personnel Carrier (APC) vehicles.
The exact casualty figure could not be verified immediately.
Al-shabab wants to force out AMISOM and other foreign troops had been fighting Somali government forces more than decade.
The group now controls remote areas in South and central Somalia after it has been pushed from the major towns by the allied troops.
