MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – four senior al-Shabaab leaders have surrendered to Somali government amid major security operations against the group’s fighters in central Somalia.
Somali information ministry said a top-ranking official from Al-Shabaab, Mohamed Ali Hassan alias Moalim Hudeifa defected to Somali government in HirShabelle State.
Moalim Hudeifa was the commander of Al-Shabaab fighters who recently fought the government and clan vigilante forces in Middle Shabelle region.
Hudeifa was accompanied by three other al-Shabaab surrendered to the Somali National Forces in HirShabelle State.
The government officilas have welcomed the surrender of Hudeifa, calling on other Al-Shabaab fighters to heed the call for amnesty and rehabilitation.
According to the information ministry, several al-Shabaab operatives including self-styled elders and commanders have surrendered to the government.
Al-Shabaab lost dozens of villages and towns in south-central Somalia following foerce fighting with Somali forces and clan militias.
