MOGADISHU(Halbeeg News)- Somali president Mohamed Abdullahi Farmajo has today received the credential letters of the new ambassador from the United States to Somalia, Donald Yamamoto.
President Farmajo praised the newly appointed ambassador and hoped that he will strengthen the relations between Somalia and US.
United States wants to rebuild its diplomatic relations with Somalia for the first time since two American Black Hawk helicopters were shot down in Mogadishu in 1993.
Mr. Yamamoto was nominated in July this year to replace Mr. Stephen Michael Schwartz who has been serving the office since July 2016.
The new U.S. envoy who served as US ambassador to Ethiopia and Djibouti arrived in Somalia last week to assume office.
Mr Yamamoto, 64 also worked in an acting capacity as head of the State Department’s Africa bureau during the first term of Obama administration.
The United States which maintains a non-resident diplomatic mission in Nairobi for Somalia had restored its diplomatic mission in Somalia in 2014 for the first time since the “Black Hawk Down” incident 25 years ago.
