ADDIS ABABA (Halbeeg News) – Ethiopia has appointed Engineer Kifle Horo as the new project manager for the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), according to a statement issued by the Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP).
The former Project Manager Simegnew Bekele was found dead in his vehicle on one of the busiest streets of capital Addis Ababa on July 23 this year.
Mr. Horo, who will be deputised by Engineer Epherem Woldekidan and Fekadu Kebede replaces engineer Simegnew Bekele.
Ethiopia has been pushing on with the project in the face of opposition from Egypt which fears it will affect the flow of the Nile, its main source of water. In June, the leaders of Ethiopia and Egypt vowed to iron out their differences peacefully.
The dam was scheduled to be completed within five years, but more than seven years down the line it is nowhere near complete.
Ethiopia’s Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed this April complained of delays, blaming the military-based local contractor.
