MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The United Nations children’s agency (UNICEF) announced on Thursday that it is appealing for $222 million to support 3.2 million Somalis, including 2 million children, in 2024.
“Approximately half of Somalis face a shortage of sustainable and safe water for drinking and other household needs, which has increased acute watery diarrhea/cholera cases,” UNICEF said in its appeal released in Mogadishu, the capital of Somalia.
UNICEF said that in 2023, 29 areas affected by the drought reported 13,000 cases of cholera and 31 fatalities.
According to the UN agency, between August 2023 and July 2024, almost 1.5 million children under the age of five—roughly 40% of Somalia’s under-five child population—are expected to suffer from acute wasting.
