GAROWE ( Halbeeg News) – A Somali police officer based in Garowe, Puntland state was prompted after revealing his HIV status and how he managed it to the media.
Captain, Bashir Osman Awad was promoted to the rank of colonel by Puntland state deputy leader, Ahmed Elmi Osman Karash on Sunday.
Karash said he was inspired by the spirit of the officer who despite the status bit all the odds to serve the community.
“I want to congratulate Captain, Bashir for his bravery, pious and patriotism for sharing his status with the media for awareness,” Karash said.
“After recommendations from relevant agencies on his bravery, I want to promote him to the rank of Colonel.” He added.
Colonel, Awad joined an event to mark World Aids Day in Garowe where he is based and narrated his ordeal on stigmatization on those affected by the HIV virus.
His early story on how he was infected and the way he managed was shared online widely and was praised for his bravery and trust by the social media users mainly on Facebook and Twitter.
World Aids Day was marked across the globe on 1st December every year to create awareness on the killer disease.
