WAJIR (Halbeeg News) – Wajir County authorities have vowed to probe Saturday’s violence which reportedly caused injuries of civilians in Wajir town.
Five people are nursing gunshot wounds after they were injured during confrontations with the police at Bula Barwaqo suburb of the town.
The police opened fire on a crowd of protesters who had intercepted a convoy ferrying relief food in the county.
According to local media, the cause of the uproar is believed to be political even though the residents of the county denied claims that the demonstration was targeting to taint the image, of Wajir Governor Mohamed Abdi Mahmoud.
Most of the injured were rushed to Wajir Referral Hospital where they undergoing treatment.
Confirming the incident Wajir County Commissioner (CC), Lynford Kibaara who spoke to the media said hundreds of youths started pelting police with stones, prompting the shootout.
He pledged that the authorities will investigate the incident.
“We are aware that there was an incident which reportedly caused injuries of several people, the case is handed over to the respective authorities,” he said.
