MOGADISHU ( Halbeeg News) – United States has announced that it will partially resume the provision of security assistance to non-mentored units of the Somali National Army (SNA).
In a statement by US Mission to Somalia, the US government said the resumption will be implemented on a pilot basis with a unit taking part in critical transition operations in Lower Shabelle.
“This resumption of assistance demonstrates our confidence that the FGS and SNA will continue to improve accountability and fight corruption,” the statement reads in part.
US indicated that the Federal Government of Somalia made internal reforms and an inspection of the recipient unit.
The statement underscored that the United States assesses that the Federal Government of Somalia and the SNA have undertaken significant efforts to improve accountability over donor resources.
The United States, in coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, paused assistance to non-mentored units of the Somali National Army in December 2017.
Somali security force members who are actively fighting al-Shabab have been receiving some form of mentorship from either the U.S. or a third party before the suspension
