MOGADISHU(Halbeeg News)- The United States of America has re-opened its embassy in Somalia after it closed it is embassy before two decades, the State Department confirmed on Tuesday.
According to the statement from the state department US termed the re-opening of the diplomatic mission in Somalia as a historic adding that it will facilitate and strengthen the working relationship between Somalia and United States.
“This historic event reflects Somalia’s progress in recent years and is another step forward in formalizing US diplomatic engagement in Mogadishu since recognizing the Federal Government of Somalia in 2013,” department spokeswoman Heather Nauert said in a statement
Last week, the newly appointed ambassador of United States to Somalia, Donald Yamamoto disclosed plans to relocate the US mission to Mogadishu located at US embassy in Nairobi.
In an interview with VOA, ambassador Yamamoto stated that the move to relocate the mission could take place before the end of the year.
United States had not had a diplomatic mission in Somalia since the closure of the embassy in 1991 as the country descended into civil after the government led by Mohamed Siyad Barre.
Diplomatic relations between the two countries were maintained through the mission based at the Nairobi embassy.
US President, Donald Trump tapped Donald Yamamoto earlier this year to be the permanent US ambassador to Somalia, a nomination confirmed by the Senate in October.
