MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – Somali forces backed by U.S. elite troops have destroyed Al-Shabaab bases following dawn attacks in Middle Shabelle region.
The government had recently intensified operations to annihilate Al-Shabaab fighters from South and Central Somalia.
Mr. Muse Nur Shueyb, Assistant district commissioner for security affairs said the troops raided several villages under the control Al-Shabaab.
Mr. Shueyb pointed out that the forces engaged Al-Shabaab in brief gun battle before Daniga, Barwaqo, Garas-weyn and Walamoy villages.
“The Somali troops backed by U.S. forces raided Al-Shabaab bases in four villages. Al-Shabaab attempted to resist but the allied forces overpowered them,” Mr. Shueyb said.
According to the officials, several Al-Shabaab fighters were killed in the raid.
“A number of Al-Shabaab fighters were killed in covert operations that took place in Daniga, Barwaqo, Garas-weyn and Walamoy villages,” he explained.
The U.S. military advisers provide substantial air and ground support to the Somali National Army [SNA] and the African Union forces in battling against the Al-Shabaab.
The attack comes barely a month after Somali forces killed several Al-Shabaab fighters in lower Shabelle region.
Al-Shabaab which wants to overthrow the Somali government has been fighting SNA and AMISOM forces since 2007 when AU deployed its troops in Somalia.
Despite losing many major towns to Somali government forces, the group controlled a large swath of remote areas.
Al-Shabaab carries out hit and runs attacks on military bases in South and central Somalia.
