MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The US military says it has carried out two airstrikes in central Somalia targeting Al-Shabaab, killed six fighters.
The US Africa Command statement on Thursday said it military killed the fighters when it launched the airstrikes against targets near Haradere town in Galmudug state to the northeast of the capital, Mogadishu.
According to the statement, a huge cache of weapons was destroyed in a second airstrike on Wednesday.
No civilian was killed during the two air strikes.
“These precision airstrikes were conducted in coordination with and in support of the Federal Government of Somalia as it continues to degrade Al-Shabaab. Airstrikes reduce Al-Shabaab’s ability to plot future attacks, disrupt its leadership networks, and degrade its freedom of maneuver within the region,” the statement reads in part.
Various airstrikes conducted on Monday and Tuesday this week left 44 Al-Shabaab dead in different parts of the country.
The US forces have committed to continue degrading the Al-Shabaab alongside AMISOM forces in a bid to reduce their chances to pose a security threat in Somalia and the region.
In October, another U.S. airstrike in the vicinity of Harardhere killed at least 60 Al-Shabaab militants.
The US has carried out 35 airstrikes this year against Al-Shabaab fighters in central and southern Somalia.
