MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – At least two Al-Shabab fighters have been killed in a new airstrike west of Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, the U.S. military reported Thursday.
The U.S. African command said U.S. forces carried out an airstrike September 11 in support of and in coordination with Somalia’s federal government.
The attack took place in Mubarak village which lies 37 miles west of Mogadishu.
“U.S. forces conducted an airstrike during a Somali partner forces-led operation against Al-Shabab, an al-Qaeda-affiliate terrorist group, September 11, 2018, in the central Somali village of Mubarak, approximately 37 miles west of Mogadishu,” the statement reads.
The Mission said the airtrike was in self-defense after US and partner (Somali) forces came under attack.
“The U.S. airstrike was conducted against the enemy fighting position in self defence after U.S. and partner forces came under attack,” the mission stated.
AFRICOM said its assessments indicated no civilians were killed in the attack.
“We currently assess two (2) terrorists were killed and one (1) terrorist was wounded in the strike. We currently assess no civilian wounded in action,” Africom affirmed.
The command said they are ready to support and protect citizens across the World from this group.
The US added that together with other international partners they are committed to providing Somali AMISOM and Somali National Security Forces the support they need in the fight against violent extreme-organizations.
“U.S. forces will continue to use all authorized and appropriate measures to protect U.S. citizens and to disable terrorist threats. This includes partnering with AMISOM and Somali National Security Forces (SNSF) in combined counter-terrorism operations and targeting terrorists, their training camps, and their safe havens throughout Somalia and the region,” the command said.
